Dr Niall Hickey

Niall joined the Participant Panel in 2026 as the parent of a child enrolled in the Generation Study. Diagnosed with a rare hereditary kidney disease as a teenager, his journey began before the establishment of Genomics England and widespread genomic testing. The excellent care and clinical investigations of his NHS doctors during this diagnostic process inspired him to pursue a career in science, first as a kidney disease researcher and later within the genomics field. 

As a Panel member, Niall is committed to representing the parents and children of the Generation Study and translating complex scientific concepts into accessible information. He combines his personal experience of familial rare disease with his scientific background to passionately advocate for families in similar positions.
