Dr Gail Marzetti

Gail has been the Director of Science, Research and Evidence at the Department of Health and Social Care and Deputy CEO of the National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) since 2022. In this role she has focused on improving the impact of NIHR and DHSC funded research in terms of both health outcomes and returns to the economy.  She is also interested in research inclusion and widening access to research to cover the different demographics and geographies. 

She is an economist by background and has worked for many years in international and humanitarian development. She was part of the team that established Department for International Development’s Research and Evidence Division, putting evidence at the heart of policy and programmes. In her early career Gail was a food security expert working in conflict and post conflict reconstruction.  Gail holds a PhD from Manchester University.
