PanelApp is one of the most extensive publicly available knowledge bases of gene-disease associations and is maintained by the Genomics England Biocuration Team. Finding scientific publications containing vital information to maintain the knowledge base is a needle-in-a-haystack problem and takes large amounts of curator time. Here we introduce our new machine learning solution to this problem that actively scours the scientific literature, freeing up vital curator time for expert evaluation of evidence, rather than finding it.

Speakers

Samuel Barnett is an Applied Machine Learning Engineer at Genomics England, where he applies machine learning to revolutionize research and healthcare. He collaborates with the multimodal and biocuration teams, pioneering advancements in cancer research and natural language processing. Prior to joining Genomics England, Sam earned his PhD from the University of Sheffield and completed postdoctoral fellowships in Singapore and Germany researching cell motility.

Arina Puzriakova is a Scientific Curator at Genomics England, where she curates evidence of gene-disease associations for gene panels used in the genome analysis of patients with rare conditions. Before Genomics England, she completed a master's at UCL in Genetics of Human Disease, with a thesis focused on finding diagnoses for patients with hereditary ataxia using whole-genome sequencing data analysis.
