New non-executive directors join Genomics England Board

Genomics England is pleased to announce the appointments of Richard Meddings and Dr Doug Gurr as Non-Executive Directors.

Richard Meddings is the current Chair of NHS England. From 2002 to 2014, Richard was a Group Executive Director at Standard Chartered, and Group Finance Director for eight years. Prior to that he was Group Finance Director at the Woolwich and Group Financial Controller of Barclays. He has in the past been Chairman of TSB Bank, served on the Board of HM Treasury, as a Non-Executive Director on the Boards of Credit Suisse, Legal & General, 3i Group, Jardine Lloyd Thompson Group and at Deutsche Bank A.G.

His wealth of experience in leadership roles is also evident through his ten years as Chairman of Seeing is Believing, a charity focused on curing avoidable blindness. In addition, Richard was a Trustee and Deputy Chair of Teach First. He has a degree in Modern History from Exeter College, Oxford.

Dr Doug Gurr is currently Director of The Natural History Museum and Chairman of the Alan Turing Institute. His previous roles include Country Manager of Amazon UK and President of Amazon China. He has also held senior roles in Government, worked as a partner at consultancy firm McKinsey, Board Director at Asda-Walmart and was founder and CEO of internet start-up Blueheath. He has two degrees in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge and a PhD in Theoretical Computer Science from the University of Edinburgh.

Dr Gurr has experience of both executive and non-executive leadership of large, complex organisations in both the public and the private sector. This includes over 20 years of Board experience and over 10 years of Chair experience, including chairing both the boards of the Science Museum Group and the British Heart Foundation. He is a Non-Executive Director of the Department of Health and Social Care and is a Director of UK Biobank.

With distinguished careers spanning both the private and public sectors, Richard and Doug’s strategic insights and leadership will be invaluable as Genomics England continues to drive forward its mission of transforming healthcare through genomic research and analysis.
