Professor Bill Newman

Professor Newman is a Professor of Translational Genomic Medicine at the University of Manchester, and Consultant in Genomic Medicine at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust . He studied Medicine at Manchester and completed postgraduate training in Clinical Genetics undertaking a PhD as a Wellcome Trust Fellow on the genetics of skeletal development.

Professor Newman moved to Toronto to undertake a Fellowship to work on genetic studies of common inflammatory diseases. His research is now primarily focused on pharmacogenetics (response to medication), especially the use of point of care testing to avoid adverse reactions. He also has a clinical research program on ultra rare genetic conditions, involving the bladder (leading the NIHR-MRC Rare disease node -REOLUT). He is the President of the European Society of Human Genetics 2024-25.
