Genomic Equity Series: Reducing inequalities through community engagement

The Genomic Equity Series is a monthly online series hosted by the Diverse Data initiative at Genomics England, in collaboration with the Data Science for Health Equity community, which aims to share the latest experiences, projects and research of those working to improve equity in genomic medicine across the world.

About this month's event

For the May instalment of the Genomic Equity series, we are delighted to host Dr. Sophie Leonardi and Nasima Miah from The Centre of Ethnic Health Research, based in Leicester.

Sophie is a highly accomplished Operations Manager with a strong background in public health initiatives. She earned her PhD in Physical Activity, Sedentary Behaviour and Health in 2012 and has since gained extensive experience in developing and implementing evidence-based public health programs.

Sophie is dedicated to promoting health equity and improving health outcomes for all populations. As the Operations Manager for The Centre for Ethnic Health Research, she is committed to using her expertise and experience to continue making a meaningful impact in the field of public health and tackling health inequalities.

Nasima is an experienced Community Engagement Officer working at The Centre for Ethnic Health Research and focussing addressing ethnic health inequalities. With a BSc Honors degree in Public and Community Health Studies, Nasima has over a decade of experience in community engagement, project management, delivery, planning and evaluation.

Nasima’s primary focus is to engage with communities and develop effective strategies that address health disparities among ethnic groups. I work closely with community leaders, faith leaders, academics, healthcare providers and other stakeholders to identify areas of need and implement targeted interventions that promote health and well-being.

Sophie and Nasima will be presenting on the work of The Centre for Ethnic Health Research. This will include the Centre’s structure and approach to community engagement to deliver high quality and representative research as well as showing some examples of The Centre’s creative approaches to community engagement.

Diverse Data

Diverse Data is a new initiative set up by Genomics England to reduce inequalities in genomic medicine, by ensuring that all patients, regardless of their background, receive the same quality of genomics-enabled personalized medicine, supported by the latest research on people like them. The initiative will be setting up new research projects, working closely with community groups, conducting large-scale sequencing efforts, and will be building practical tools to support everyone in the genomics community to put equity at the centre of their work.
