Research Seminar: Pan Cancer and Molecular Oncology

This month the research seminar will feature talks from members of the Pan Cancer and Molecular Oncology Community. This month's talks are listed below:

Genetic risks for cancer-associated thrombosis

  • Participant data from the NGRL has advanced our understanding of associations between tumour somatic mutations and risk of venous thromboembolism.
  • This talk will provide insights into interactions between somatic mutations and inherited thrombophilia variants.
  • Integrating tumour and germline whole-genome sequence data may inform VTE risk stratification in cancer patients and provide insights into mechanisms linking tumour biology and thrombosis.

-Naomi Cornish, GW4 Clinical Academic Training Fellow, University of Bristol

Insights into Testicular Germ Cell Tumorigenesis From Whole-Genome Data

-Dr Máire Ní Leathlobhair, Assistant Professor in Genetics, Smurfit Institute of Genetics, Trinity College Dublin

About the speakers:

Naomi Cornish, GW4 Clinical Academic Training Fellow, University of Bristol

Naomi is a Wellcome Trust-funded GW4 clinical academic doctoral fellow and haematology specialist trainee based at the University of Bristol. Her research focuses on using genetic epidemiology and data-driven approaches to improve risk prediction of blood disorders.

Dr Máire Ní Leathlobhair, Assistant Professor in Genetics, Smurfit Institute of Genetics, Trinity College Dublin

Máire Ní Leathlobhair is a computational biologist studying genome evolution, with a particular focus on how evolutionary processes shape cancer genomes. After a B.A. in Mathematics from Trinity College Dublin and a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences at the University of Cambridge, Ní Leathlobhair held a Junior Research Fellowship jointly between the Big Data Institute and the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research at the University of Oxford. She has been a PI and faculty member at Trinity College Dublin since 2021.

About the research seminars:

The Genomics England Research Seminar series is a season of events held to demonstrate the best research from Genomics England and our partners. They started in October 2018, and are monthly, free-to-attend talks presented by Research Network members on the latest research being performed using data from the National Genomic Research Library.

The seminars will be held on the last Tuesday of each month at 2 to 3pm. These will be online sessions open to everyone and free to attend, we hope to have representation from across the Research Network and 100,000 Genomes Project participants as well as anyone else who would be interested in joining.

For updates on the seminars including announcements and speakers please follow the Genomics England twitter page. You can watch all previous Research Seminars on the Genomics England YouTube channel.

If you would like to present your research from the Genomics England Research Environment at one of these events please get in touch with the Research Management team at [email protected] and if you intend to publish on this research please include this so that we can publicise your paper on our Publications page.
