Genomics England appoints Dr Ellen Thomas as Chief Medical Officer

Genomics England is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Ellen Thomas as its new Chief Medical Officer.

Ellen trained as a clinical geneticist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust, and has worked at Genomics England since 2015, where she has previously held several roles including Interim Chief Medical Officer and Deputy Chief Medical Officer.

At Genomics England she has worked on delivery of the 100,000 Genomes Project, and now leads on Genomics England’s contributions to the NHS Genomic Medicine Service, and on implementation of the ground-breaking Generation Study, as well as supporting the connections between research and clinical care for participants and researchers within the National Genomic Research Library.

Ellen holds a medical degree from the University of Cambridge and has completed advanced training in clinical genetics. She studied for a PhD at Imperial College, using early high-throughput sequencing technology to investigate genetic contributions to adult-onset genomic conditions.

She is widely recognised for her contributions to the field of genomics and has published numerous research papers on the subject. Her visionary approach and dedication to the integration of genomics in healthcare make her a highly respected leader in the medical community.
