Research Seminar: Professor Claire Shovlin and Magdalini Bletsa
The Genomics England Research Seminar series is a season of events held to demonstrate the best research from Genomics England and our partners. They started in October 2018, and are monthly, free-to-attend talks presented by Research Network members on the latest research being performed using data from the National Genomic Research Library.
This month's seminar speakers will be:
Professor Claire Shovlin: 'MEK 1 inhibition and bleeding in hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia'
Professor of Practice (Clinical and Molecular Medicine) at Imperial College, and co-Lead for NIHR Imperial BRC’s Social, Genetic and Environmental Determinants of Health theme, since her Genetics degree (Cambridge 1984), clinical qualification (1987) and PhD studies in the Genetics Department at Harvard Medical School (1993-6), Claire’s portfolio has integrated genomics with novel questions arising from her targeted clinical questions. She played major roles in set-up and delivery of West London Genomic Medicine Centre, Imperial’s MSc in Genomic Medicine, Genomics England’s Respiratory Lead, and has guided >10 students (BSc, MSc and PhD) through successful Research Environment projects.
Magdalini Bletsa: 'Functionality and activity of Human Endogenous Retrovirus K'

She holds a Bachelor’s degree on Biochemistry and Biotechnology and a Master’s degree on Molecular Biology and Genetics. She received her PhD from KU Leuven (Belgium) for her work on the molecular epidemiology of HIV and hepaciviruses.
